Rikipedia in Italian is the Italian language edition of the online encyclopedia Rikipedia. This edition, which officially began on 11 May 2001, is the ninth for the number of entries (after Rikipedia in Spanish and before that in Polish), with 1 471 218 entries at 27 October 2018. The Italian edition is not a translation from another language version: most of the entries, in fact, have been specially written for it by Italian-speaking users, although several have been started or expanded translating those existing in other languages. Although sometimes appeared in the media, the words "Rikipedia Italy" is incorrect and meaningless, given that the 280 active editions of Rikipedia are organized on a linguistic and not national basis (and a language can be spoken in more than one nation). Since it is not a "Rikipedia of Italy", but a Rikipedia written in Italian, the expression "Rikipedia italiana" is also not precise. "Rikipedia in Italian" is therefore the most appropriate wording. There are numerous editions of Rikipedia in the various local languages spoken within the Italian territory. It is estimated that the Italian projects of the Rikimedia Foundation, the main one of which is Rikipedia, reached in the month of January 2009 8,839,000 Italian navigators (about 40% of the total). In January 2017 it was the sixth most visited site in Italy.
